Garage Guide X — the home-garage maintenance handbook

About

Who publishes Garage Guide X, and why

We write about maintaining a car at home: what you can sensibly do on your own driveway, how to do it without hurting yourself, and where the line sits between a home job and a shop job.

What this site is

Garage Guide X is an independent editorial publication about home car maintenance, written for a general audience in the United States. It is a website of written guides and nothing else. We do not sell parts, tools, fluids or consumables. We do not book repairs, operate a garage, or run a workshop. We do not take payment from manufacturers, parts brands, tool brands or repair chains in exchange for coverage or recommendation, and no page on this site carries an advertorial offer.

That matters because the subject invites conflicts of interest. A great deal of maintenance writing online exists to sell a specific product. Ours does not, which means we are free to say that the tool you already own is fine, that a job is not worth doing yet, or that the right answer is to book a professional.

What we cover

The scope is deliberately narrow and practical:

  • Setting up a workable home space — level ground, light, a clear surface, power, spill control and ventilation.
  • The starter tool kit that earns its place, and the tools that are not worth buying at the start.
  • Working safely: jack stands and chocks, designated jacking points, eye protection, hot components, pressurised cooling systems, battery handling and fluid disposal.
  • The routine jobs a confident owner can handle at home — oil and filter, engine and cabin air filters, wiper blades, battery terminals, tire pressure and rotation, brake pad inspection and topping fluids.
  • A clear, unhedged list of the jobs that belong in a professional shop, and the reason in each case.
  • Keeping a maintenance record, and why it is worth the minute it costs.

How we write

Three rules govern everything we publish.

The manual outranks us

Vehicles differ in jacking points, torque figures, fluid specifications, filter types, capacities and service intervals. Your owner's manual and the manufacturer's service information were produced by the people who tested those components. Where our general guidance and your manual disagree, the manual is right. We say so on every page rather than burying it.

We hedge where we are uncertain

We do not publish invented statistics, numbers without a source, manufactured urgency, or promises about savings or outcomes we cannot know. Where a figure is a common rule of thumb rather than a specification, we describe it that way. Where the honest answer is "it depends on your car", that is what we write.

Safety is not softened for readability

Some of what we describe involves lifting a vehicle, hot exhaust components, pressurised systems and hazardous fluids. Done carelessly, that work can cause serious injury. We state the risk plainly rather than tucking it into a footnote, and we would rather a reader closed the page and called a shop than attempted something on a sloped driveway with the wrong equipment.

Where we draw the line

There is a clear boundary between what an owner can sensibly do at home and what needs a professional. Checking a pressure, changing a filter, cleaning a terminal, inspecting a pad — owner territory. Anything under spring tension, air-conditioning refrigerant work, brake hydraulics, timing belts and chains, airbags and restraint systems, transmission internals, wheel alignment and recurring fault codes are shop work. We point readers to a qualified professional in those cases every time, because that is genuinely the right answer and not a disclaimer.

Corrections

We correct things. If you find a factual error, a procedure described in a way that could be unsafe, or an explanation that reads as unclear, please write to info@garageguidex.com and we will review it and update the page.
