What this guidance is, and what it is not
Home maintenance involves real physical risk. This page sets out the limits of what we publish so you can judge for yourself when to proceed and when to stop.

General information only
Everything published on Garage Guide X is general educational information for a broad audience in the United States. It is not a service manual, not a repair procedure for your specific vehicle, and not professional advice of any kind. Reading this site does not create a professional, advisory, technical or contractual relationship between you and us.
Your manual and the manufacturer outrank us
Vehicles differ enormously in jacking points, torque specifications, fluid types and capacities, filter part numbers, service intervals, electrical layout and safety systems. Your owner's manual and the manufacturer's published service information were produced by the people who designed and tested those components. Where our general guidance differs from them in any respect, follow the manufacturer. If your vehicle is under warranty or subject to a recall or technical service bulletin, follow the manufacturer's instructions in full.
Physical risk
Some of the work described on this site can cause serious or fatal injury if done incorrectly. In particular: a vehicle supported only by a jack can fall. Never place any part of your body under a vehicle that is not resting on rated jack stands or an equivalent designed support, on level ground, with the wheels chocked and the vehicle push-tested first.
Other specific hazards include hot exhaust and engine components, cooling systems under pressure, batteries that vent flammable gas and can deliver very high current, springs and other components that store energy, fuel and fuel vapour, brake dust, corrosive and toxic fluids, and carbon monoxide from an engine run in an enclosed space. If you are not confident that you can manage these hazards with the equipment you have, in the space you have, do not begin the job.
When to use a professional
We identify work throughout the site that we consider shop work rather than home work. That list includes, without being exhaustive: anything under spring tension such as strut and coil-spring assemblies; air-conditioning and refrigerant handling; brake hydraulic components including calipers, hoses, lines and master cylinders; timing belts and chains; airbags and restraint systems; transmission internals; wheel alignment; and any fault code that returns after being cleared. Please use a qualified, licensed shop for those and for any repair that affects the safe operation of the vehicle.
If a vehicle is already unsafe to drive — a brake problem, a steering problem, a fuel leak, a fire risk, or damage from a collision — stop using it and contact a professional or a roadside service. Do not use this site as a substitute for that decision.
No promises of outcome
We do not promise that following any guidance here will prevent a breakdown, extend the life of a component, pass an inspection, save a particular amount of money, or produce any specific result. Vehicle condition, age, history, climate, driving pattern and the quality of parts and fluids used all affect the outcome, and none of those are within our knowledge or control.
Accuracy and currency
We take care to be accurate and to be plain about uncertainty, but we cannot warrant that every page is complete, current or free of error. Specifications, regulations, recycling arrangements and manufacturer recommendations change over time, and a page that was accurate when published may not remain so. Please verify anything that matters against a current, vehicle-specific source before you act on it.
Independence and commercial relationships
Garage Guide X is an independent editorial site. We do not sell parts, tools, fluids or services. We do not book repairs and we do not operate a garage. We are not paid by any manufacturer, parts brand, tool brand or repair chain to recommend, review or mention anything, and no page on this site carries a sponsored offer. Where we name a category of product — a torque wrench, a cap-style filter wrench, a terminal brush — it is a description of the tool, not an endorsement of a particular brand.
External links
Where we link to a third-party page, we do so because it appeared useful at the time. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability or practices, and a link is not an endorsement.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Garage Guide X and its operators are not liable for any loss, injury, damage or cost arising from the use of, or reliance on, the information published on this site. You are responsible for deciding whether a task is within your competence, for the equipment you use, for the condition of your workspace, and for the consequences of the work you carry out on your own vehicle.
Corrections
If you believe a page on this site is inaccurate, out of date, or describes something in a way that could lead a reader into an unsafe procedure, please write to info@garageguidex.com with the page and the problem. We treat safety corrections as the highest priority.
